Back to School Shopping Made Me Realize It Was My Turn Too
Can I Really Do This? A Guide for Women Starting Over
There’s something about this time of year.
It feels like something exciting is on the way.
Helping your children set up their new binders and backpacks.
The smell of new pencils and crayons
Adding a fresh stack of paper to a binder and hearing the satisfying pop when you close it.
It’s the season of a fresh start.
It’s back-to-school time.
As you’re preparing to send your kids back to school or college, you feel that familiar tug in your chest. A small ache. Maybe a wish. Maybe you whisper to yourself when no one can hear you. “I wish I could have a fresh start. I wish I needed to buy a new notebook. I wish I were learning a new career.”
Maybe you started college but never finished. Perhaps you finished, only to land a job that seemed great on paper but never felt quite right. Or maybe you got swept up in life, got married, had babies, and took on more responsibilities. Somewhere along the way, you set your dreams on a shelf. They’re still there, go peek, I’ll wait.
They’ve been patiently waiting, not forgotten, resting until the time was right.
Now is the time for you. It’s time to take that dream off the shelf and dust it off. It’s telling you that now is your time. It is time to create something just for you – a work from home career or side hustle that brings you joy.
I know, because I’ve been there.
Years ago, I thought I’d be working in a hospital laboratory. But I took one of the detours life often offers. Not a bad one, just different from what I imagined for myself. My detour led me to marriage and starting a family.
Along the way, I had some wonderful jobs, and each one helped me build valuable skills. But even with that experience, something still felt incomplete. Now that I had a family, I wanted a job I could do from home. I wanted to be present with my children while still earning an income of my own.
I spent hours online trying to figure out how to make that dream happen. The endless internet searches: “Work from home jobs,” “Work at home moms,” “remote secretary,” “home secretary,” “how to start a home business,” and more that I can’t remember.
Then one day, as I searched…there it was.
I felt like the heavens had opened and a bright light was shining on my computer screen.
I saw the words: Virtual Assistant.
My shoulders relaxed, and I took a deep breath. I had a direction.
It was the early 2000s, and the industry was beginning to grow. Right then, I knew I had found a new path, and I was ready to learn everything I could.
I bought a notebook and a new set of pens and started mapping out my future.
It felt like going back to school in the best way.
I read everything I could find about the Virtual Assistant industry. I researched and filled my new notebook with notes. I listened to podcasts while making dinner and driving my children to and from activities. I watched YouTube videos during the children’s naptime and late at night when everyone else was watching television.
But it wasn’t enough. I quickly realized that if I wanted to take this seriously and turn it into a real business, I needed more than free resources. That’s when I found the Online International Virtual Assistants Convention (OIVAC). I enrolled in a few online courses and absorbed every lesson. But the best decision I made was taking a course with a Virtual Assistant coach who had been working from home for many years and knew what she was doing. I faithfully worked through each module and set up my business correctly. She even included some one-on-one calls with me to be sure I was making progress and to answer all the questions I had. She encouraged me and made me believe I could do this. AND I DID!
If you’re nodding along and feeling that same tug, I want you to know something important: it’s not too late.
Go ahead and buy yourself that new notebook.
Get the nice pens.
Set up a cozy corner in your home with your laptop and imagine what your new work-from-home life could look like.
This year, as you buy school supplies and a new notebook for yourself, you are claiming a dream. You are making space for a new chapter in YOUR life. And it’s going to be a good one.

So if you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it. Your story is still being written, and the next chapter is yours to shape.
